HERKIMER — Herkimer County’s tax foreclosure auction is expected to take place in June and the county Legislature took a step toward preparing for it Wednesday by voting to enter into a three-year contract with Michael W. Knapp Jr. to conduct it.
The contract covers the auctions for the In Rem tax foreclosure parcels for 2019, 2020 and 2021, covering the 2017, 2018 and 2019 In Rem sale years. Auctions by Knapp will be paid $400 for each parcel sold at auction, $200 per parcel offered but not sold at auction and $200 for any parcel that is removed or withdrawn from the auction list after the day Herkimer County takes title to the parcels.
The Legislature voted last year to extend a five-year contract with Knapp for one year.
Action on the properties being considered for auction will begin in mid- to late-March after the deadline passes for property owners to pay their taxes, according to Herkimer County Administrator James Wallace. A judge will appoint an attorney to handle the process and the list of properties will then come to the Legislature.
The auction is generally held the first Saturday in June, Wallace said.
