MASON CITY, Iowa - Some properties in Cerro Gordo County could soon be put on the market if the owners don't pay their back property taxes.
The county treasurer's office is requesting bids for puchasing about 50 tax sale certificates for a range of properties, including empty lots, mobile homes and residential properties.
Owners who are behind on their taxes still have the opportunity to pay those taxes before their properties go up for sale.
County Treasurer Pat Wright says the sale is important for the county because if owners don't pay up or bids are not submitted, the county assumes the property and could lose money.
"Once it goes to a Cerro Gordo County tax sale, then we can no longer list it and sell it to an individual again. It's a very costly process...but we're very excited about it, we're willing and wanting to clean these parcels up," Wright says.
